Is Social Media destroying America?

In today's world of instant messaging and always-on media, where distinctions between fact and fiction are often blurred, Lincoln "Mac" MacMahan, a scarred and war-torn veteran now a professor at a northeastern university, displays remarkable kindness teaching his students the fundamentals of messaging and communication the interface of human nature and society.

Unexpectedly, as the Fall semester unfolds to reveal the challenges in discerning truth, Mac and his students uncover a conspiracy inside the highest levels of government, just weeks before the upcoming Presidential election. Fighting against a media storm, character assassination, and the threat of danger, they attempt to reveal the truth about the conspiracy.

But will that truth and the growing bond between Mac and his students be sufficient to prevent America from being hijacked by its leadership?

The election is looming as Mac struggles with the value of his own life in pursuit of the truth, the meaning of faith, and the disappearance of a beautiful young woman he imagines to be his true love.

Oblique edition by TD Holt Literature Fiction eBooks

This novel is for thinkers, for those who wonder where our culture is going and what really moves people. It will definitely strike a nerve with Millennials. Its plot moves briskly with issues of contemporary life woven in and the reader gets caught up in the backstories of the heroes. ‘Mac’ the professor is particularly endearing as he tries hard to be a role model and a kind of older brother/accessible authority figure to his students, but he needs their help as much as they need his. The students are clever, but they don’t yet have the experience to deal with life’s many curve balls. Mac on the other hand has the painful experience of having served in combat and seen his unit suffer and die, and now he is trying to reattach himself to life in the best way he can, but he is damaged (PTSD) and has the physical and mental scars to show for it. The gradual, and often bumpy, integration of the two generations, or half generations, is a compelling story in itself.

But at the center of this political thriller is the question of messaging: in the public arena of the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of today’s influential sound-bites, who controls the package, and how can anyone get to the truth when the perception is reality and perception is a subjective and easily manipulated thing. This group of college kids and their professor come upon a conspiracy that has grave implications for the country, and they are drawn into a race to get their message out before those in power and in immediate control of the media outlets thwart their efforts, with dire consequences for the entire team.

The medium is the message, McLuhan once told us. This story is about what happens when today’s young people, diverse, vulnerable, yet wanting more, go down that rabbit hole to find themselves.

From the beginning, this story caught my attention—and held it to the climax. It's an engrossing, well-paced story, told through the activities (and thoughts) of complex characters.
This was a surprising book in many ways. It tells a story of political intrigue and wrongdoing from a unique vantage that enlightens and surprises. The protagonist is a damaged war veteran who as a college professor displays remarkable kindness and love towards his students. Combine those facts with a renegade political scheme to usurp the Constitution and you have a good story that is well worth reading.
In Mac's quest to inspire his students, unexpected events propel them on an energetic crusade for truth. Courage vs. fear, strength vs. weakness, tensions grow as Mac is forced to resolve internal and external battles and continue to dedicate one's life for a purpose larger than oneself. Reminders of Kipling's "If" and the "road less traveled", we are left wondering...what would I have done? Once again, T.D. Holt leads us on a suspense filled journey, where at the end you are looking forward to the next book.
If you were an Alfred Hitchcock fan, you will love this book. Of course that dates me and that's okay. I think the senior generation reading this book will bring them up to date on what is happening in this millennium and it's scary but hopeful at the same time for me anyway.. Others have written excellent reviews of the content and I truly appreciate what they had to say and how as well.
Unlike most novels in which the plot moves on a straight line with characters whose actions drive it to a conclusion, Oblique stays true to its title and moves indirectly on many levels. The main character is a battered war veteran whose personal injuries and memories of the men who died on his watch haunt his every waking moment. As a civilian, he is a college professor teaching a communications course. His students become “his charges," replacing the soldiers he led. Their essays expose a world as dangerous as the war front.
Fiction….…or harbinger of future Threats to Separation of Powers ?

Like Netflik’s “House of Cards”, Oblique weaves a tale of nefarious Government insiders scheming to exert control beyond their public positions – in this case a drive to control all 3 Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches in order to impose their social mores ….and maximize their business interests. The only folks with proof of their plans are a group of college students and their Communications Professor, Mac ….a decorated war veteran suffering from PTSD. As the story unfolds, Mac and his students are targeted for “neutralization”. Like "House of Cards", author Holt appears to be setting us up for a sequel …..can’t wait !
Read this to understand what it means to be human in an era of fake news and social media saturation. Philosophy, humor, adventure, suspense, and morality combine in this richly nuanced and gripping story to pen a love letter to America and a path to realize the ideals in this great, dynamic, constantly shifting and steadfast nation. The premise is fascinating - can America be subverted? Despite all America has gone through, it remains the greatest country the world has ever known. Read this to understand why, know what is happening today with social media across generations, and have this all in the context of a page-turning novel. You may find that your communication improves, which is, at the end of the day, what makes us human - how we communicate with each other. Enjoy!
